High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a serious medical condition that affects about one in two adults in the U.S. If left untreated, hypertension increases the risk of diseases that affect the heart, brain and kidneys.
Treating high blood pressure can become expensive so it is common for patients to search for a high blood pressure medication discount. If you’re wondering where to find a discount to save on high blood pressure medication, we’ll delve into this and more below.
Treating High Blood Pressure
Lifestyle changes, such as eating more fruit and vegetables, quitting smoking and exercising regularly, may help lower cholesterol levels. However, in many cases, medication is needed to address hypertension. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 91.7 million out of the 116 million Americans with hypertension need to take high blood pressure medication as well as make healthy lifestyle changes.
Unfortunately, the costs of treating hypertension with medication can pile up, especially for those who are prescribed more than one type of medication to manage hypertension. Some people try to manage the financial challenges of treatment by abruptly stopping blood pressure medication, trying to make pills last by taking them every other day or cutting pills into two to save money.
However, these methods may be dangerous and should be avoided. For instance, suddenly stopping beta blockers, a common high blood pressure medication, may cause chest pain and increase the risk of cardiac death. It’s critical to take medication as directed and only stop or decrease the dosage if your primary physician asks you to do so.
If medication costs are a concern, there are available patient assistance programs you can apply to. There’s also another convenient option: a prescription discount card, like the one from Inside Rx.

Types of High Blood Pressure Medication
There are many different types of medications your doctor may prescribe to treat your high blood pressure. You may be able to save on the following types of high blood pressure medications using your Inside Rx discount card.
Diuretics
Also called water pills, diuretics are often the first medication prescribed to a person newly diagnosed with high blood pressure. They help the kidneys remove excess sodium and water from the blood. Diuretics lower blood pressure by decreasing the amount of fluid in the veins and arteries. Some examples of diuretics are the drugs chlorthalidone, metolazone, and hydrochlorothiazide.
Angiotensin-converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitors
With high blood pressure, the heart and blood vessels have to work extra hard to pump blood throughout the body. This causes excess friction within the arteries, which in turn result in damage to the artery walls. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol forms plaque on the artery walls, making them narrower. This, in turn, further raises blood pressure.
ACE inhibitors work to lower blood pressure by keeping an enzyme in the body from converting angiotensin I to angiotensin II. The latter that causes the blood vessels to narrow as well as causes water and salt retention. They dilate the blood vessels, lowering blood pressure levels. Some commonly prescribed ACE inhibitors are enalapril, benazepril, ramipril and lisinopril.
Calcium Channel Blockers
These drugs relax blood vessels by blocking calcium from entering the cells of the heart and arteries. Some types of calcium channel blockers may also slow down heart rate, which can further reduce blood pressure. Examples of calcium channel blockers you may be prescribed for hypertension include amlodipine, felodipine, verapamil and diltiazem.
Beta-blockers
These drugs work via several mechanisms. They block the action of adrenaline, the hormone responsible for the body’s fight-or-flight response. By doing so, they slow down and reduce the force of the heartbeat. Because the heart doesn’t have to work so hard to pump blood, blood pressure levels go down. Acebutolol, carvedilol and bisoprolol are some examples of beta blockers prescribed for high blood pressure.
Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
ARBs like valsartan, losartan, candesartan and olmesartan are typically prescribed to those who cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors. ARBs and ACE inhibitors have similar effects. Both aim to help lower blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels.
