Read the Instructions for Use if available from your pharmacist before you start taking tiratricol and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 1 to 3 times a day. This medication must be mixed in water before use. Do not chew, crush, or swallow the tablets whole.
Remove the prescribed number of tablet(s) from the blister pack. Add up to 3 tablets to an oral syringe and draw up water to the 10-milliliter mark on the syringe barrel. Use only room-temperature water. Do not use any other liquid, food, or feeding formula. Put the cap on and swirl the syringe for about 30 seconds. The tablets will not fully dissolve. The mixture will look white and cloudy with small particles. Make sure you are sitting upright. Remove the cap, place the syringe tip inside your mouth toward either cheek, and slowly push the plunger to give the dose. To make sure you have taken all of the medication, draw up another 10 milliliters (2 teaspoons) of water in the same syringe, swirl, and drink all of the rinse water. Prepare no more than 3 tablets in the syringe at a time. If the dose requires more, prepare the remaining tablets separately. Throw away any unused mixture after 30 minutes.
If you are giving this medication through a feeding tube, ask your health care professional for detailed instructions on how to properly mix and give it.
Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day.
Take this medication exactly as directed. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.
The dosage is based on your medical condition, weight, labs, and response to treatment. To reduce your risk of side effects, your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
Certain products can decrease the absorption of tiratricol. Examples include calcium supplements, iron, bile acid-binding resins, or sodium polystyrene sulfonate, among others. Do not take bile acid-binding resins (such as cholestyramine, colestipol, colesevelam) or sodium polystyrene sulfonate while using this medication. If you take calcium or iron supplements, always space out your dose of tiratricol and your dose of these supplements by the same amount of time each day. (For example, if you take your supplement one hour before you take tiratricol, try to always take your supplement one hour before the tiratricol.) If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist what schedule to follow.
If you vomit within 30 minutes after taking a dose, take another dose at that time. Take the next dose at the regular time. If you vomit a second time, do not take another dose and contact your doctor right away to establish a new dosing schedule.
Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when this drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.
Tell your doctor if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse.
