If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call 1-844-764-7669.

Do not share this medication with others.

Lab and/or medical tests (such as platelet count or blood mineral levels) should be done before your child starts taking this medication and while your child is taking it. Keep all medical and lab appointments.

If your child misses a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Give the next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult the pharmacist or local waste disposal company.

Read the Patient Information Leaflet and Instructions for Use leaflet if available from the pharmacist before your child starts taking avatrombopag and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask the doctor or pharmacist.

This medication is taken by mouth with food as directed by the doctor, usually once daily. The dosage is based on your child's medical condition, lab tests, response to treatment, and other medications your child may be taking. Be sure to tell the doctor and pharmacist about all the products your child uses (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

Do not swallow the capsules whole. Open the capsule(s) and sprinkle the granules onto a small amount of soft food (such as applesauce, strawberry jelly, or plain yogurt) or liquid (such as whole/skim milk, orange juice, water, or unflavored pediatric electrolyte solution) in a spoon or cup. Mix the granules and swallow the mixture right away. The granules will not dissolve. Do not prepare the mixture ahead of time for later use. Rinse the spoon or cup with soft food or liquid and swallow again to make sure all of the drug is swallowed. Do not crush or chew the granules.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, give it at the same time each day.

Runny nose, cough, or fever may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell the doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that this medication has been prescribed because the doctor has judged that the benefit to your child is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

This medication may rarely cause serious problems from blood clots (such as heart attack, stroke, blood clots in the lungs or legs). Your child may be at increased risk for blood clots if they have a history of blood clots, chronic liver disease, certain inherited blood clotting disorders, or if they are immobile (such as on very long plane flights or being bedridden). If your child uses estrogen-containing products, these may also increase their risk. Before using this medication, if your child has any of these conditions report them to the doctor or pharmacist (see also Precautions section). Get medical help right away if any of these side effects occur: shortness of breath/rapid breathing, chest/jaw/left arm pain, unusual sweating, confusion, sudden dizziness/fainting, pain/swelling/warmth in the groin/calf, sudden/severe headaches, trouble speaking, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, stomach/abdominal pain or tenderness.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Before giving avatrombopag, tell the doctor or pharmacist if your child is allergic to it; or if your child has any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to the pharmacist for more details.

Before giving this medication, tell the doctor or pharmacist your child's medical history, especially of: blood clotting disorders (such as protein C or protein S deficiency, antithrombin deficiency, Factor V Leiden).

Before having surgery, tell the doctor or dentist about all the products your child uses (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

This form of avatrombopag is not usually used by adults. It is unlikely to be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult the doctor if you have any questions about this medication.
