What is Deflazacort used for?

This medication is used to treat a certain inherited muscle disorder (Duchenne muscular dystrophy-DMD). Deflazacort belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids.

Read the Instructions for Use if available from your pharmacist before you start taking deflazacort and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily.

If you are using the tablet form of this medication, the tablets may be swallowed whole or crushed and mixed in applesauce. After mixing the medication in applesauce, take all of the mixture right away. Do not prepare a supply for future use.

If you are using the liquid form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose. Mix the measured dose with half a glass (3 to 4 ounces/90 to 120 milliliters) of juice or milk. Do not use grapefruit juice. Take all of the mixture right away. Do not prepare a supply in advance. Consult your pharmacist if you have any questions.

The dosage is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, weight, and other medications you may be taking. Be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.

Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and your risk of side effects will increase.

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using this medication unless your doctor or pharmacist says you may do so safely. Grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects with this medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when this drug is suddenly stopped. Also, you may experience symptoms such as weakness, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, headache, and tiredness. To prevent these symptoms while you are stopping treatment with this drug, your doctor may reduce your dose gradually. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Report any new or worsening symptoms right away.
